New York Institute of Technology, often abbreviated NYIT or New York Tech, is a private, independent, non-sectarian, co-educational university located in New York, comprising two major campuses, one in Old Westbury, Long Island, and one near Columbus Circle, in Manhattan. The location of the campuses provide their students a natural surrounding environment, nestled on hundreds of wooded and landscaped acres.
The institute was founded in 1955 by Alexander Schure and is organized in seven schools and colleges: College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYCOM), College of Arts and Sciences, School of Management, School of Health Professions, School of Engineering and Computing Sciences, School of Education and School of Architecture and Design, providing a quality undergraduate and graduate education.
New York Institute of Technology was named a “2010 Great College to Work For” by The Chronicle of Higher Education for specific best practices and policies and in 2009 was ranked `Campus Safety survey`, being recognized as one of the safest colleges in America.
NYIT's athletic teams are called The Bears, which compete in Division II of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), being members of the East Coast Conference (ECC), with the exception of the baseball team, which competes in Division I, as members of Great West Conference Their official colors are blue and gold and their mascot's name is Bear. The men's basketball team reached the NCAA Division II Championship game in 1980 and the Lacrosse team has won four national championships in 1997, 2003, 2005 and 2008.
